Who we are
Oakforge began with two tables, one whiteboard, and a stubborn belief: nobody learns to speak a language by listening to someone else speak it.
From side project to studio
Our founders — a British ex-secondary-school teacher and a Malaysian corporate trainer who once failed her own English oral exam — met while volunteering at a community centre in Brickfields. They noticed the same thing from opposite directions: language schools were full of students who had been “intermediate” for years, sitting in rows of thirty, listening.
In 2013 they rented a corner of a café in Bangsar and started teaching groups of six, with one rule: the students must talk more than the teacher. Word of mouth did the rest. Today Oakforge occupies a full floor on Jalan Telawi 5, teaches online across Malaysia and beyond, and still enforces that founding rule in every class.
What we believe
- Speaking is the skill. Reading and grammar support it; they do not replace it. Every lesson at every level puts words in your mouth.
- Small is non-negotiable. Eight learners is the ceiling, because airtime divided by thirty is silence.
- Mistakes are the raw material. A class where nobody makes errors is a class where nobody is trying anything new.
- Progress must be visible. Structured reviews every eight weeks, in writing — feelings are lovely, evidence is better.
